Since we've been home a lot, D and I have been movie watching. Some good ones we've seen in the past weeks:
Batman Begins (in the theater): Finally, Batman has stepped away from camp and entered the realm of comic book drama. I really enjoyed the visual presentation as well as the character of Bruce Wayne - nice, thrilling, but for Katie Holmes. Thank god, her role was limited.
Kinsey: I have to say, I was impressed with the fact that Kinsey was ever able to do anything during his time with regard to openly talking about sex. The university really had to have been quite progressive. Considering that Kinsey's Report has been recently cited as one the most dangerous books published, this makes for an interesting viewing.
Diary of a Mad Black Woman: This is much better than the trailers made it out to be - it's about love, rage, God, family. Both sweet and funny.
Vera Drake: A very interesting, quiet movie about abortion in its dark days (days that may soon return to us) - Vera was a fascinating character for her extreme naivete and saintliness. I was surprised that it was entirely fiction - for some reason I was under the impression she really existed, or rather, the movie played like a pretty typical bio-pic. Lordy.

Liked Kinsey and Vera Drake. Another beautiful movie is the SeaInside, with Julio Bardam. It is in Spanish, but a beautiful and poetic story about a man's right to die.

Hmmmm, no Crash, no Layer Cake, no Herbie Fully Loaded? Ok, sorry that last one just came outta nowhere. But Batman Begins? You are so right and finally I can watch a comic book movie and not have that sacryn taste in my mouth the whole time!
Now, if they would just stop remaking crap!
Fromage, I cannot tell you how I wish I could get out more often to the movie theater! I have to catch everything on delay...so...there you go with the rather uninspiring choices...lol!
I have to admit (Lori, if you're out there reading, maybe this will color your decision to see it) to a bias with Batman. I love Batman, always loved the character, and have seen every film and enjoyed every one (except CatWoman) on some level despite the campiness or remake aspect. I really do think this one was superior to the others - loved the visuals with the bats, loved the dark mood of the film, reminding me of Blade Runner.
Bias aside, I agree...too many remakes out there.
Barbara, I'll have to check out SeaInside...sounds wonderful.

Well, I think we're gonna pass on seeing BB in the theater. We'll definitely rent it, though. I want so much to like it, as Chris Nolan is capable of amazing direction. That's why I was so surprised to hear such horrible reviews.
We're actually going to see 'War of the Worlds' tomorrow night. It's my husband's pick more than mine. I'm so done with that whackjob Cruise and Steve's thinly veiled moral lectures/child worshipping fests. But I guess it's like Episode III---if you're going to see it, see it BIG. That way the sparkly CG can do a better job of distracting you from the obvious problems.
